What Is Life?

Life? Yes, I know him. He’s the best friend I’ve had. I know him since I was born and I pretty well know that he’ll stay beside me till the very end.

When we were young, happiness had no need to be sought. Mother and father took care of everything for me. Life was always good. We had a lot of fun together and we shared many adventures. I loved Life and Life loved me. Thou art my brother, I look out for thee.

I grew older and I went to school. Life changed after that. We met an enemy. We met the one everyone knows as ‘competition’. I made many other friends in school. Some have lasted me till now. For the first time in my existence, Life went through highs and lows. Now that I think of it, the high came more often than the low. Life and I always managed to stay a step ahead of our sworn foe

Life and I grew into our teens and we faced new challenges. My friend Life, he was never his jolly self again. I mean I did see him laughing and having fun many times then but I never felt that he was totally satisfied. There always were so many things I wanted to do and so many characters I wanted to be. Some of these dreams were fulfilled and some were ground to dust by the way Life behaved. Competition never scared me though he always threw a spanner in my works. I overlooked him, mostly, at times – to my own disadvantage. Me – competition never scared nor I - about competition ever cared.

Life still loved me but there were times when we both hated each other. Those were the lowest points of Life. Add to that being an adult and not havin’ a wife.

Whatever adventures I’ve been through, I knew Life, my best friend would always accompany me on them. Whatever successes I had, even if the rest of the world turned its head to me, I knew Life, my best friend would always be there to cheer for me. Whatever failures I’ve had, Life has been there to give me courage to stand up and face new challenges. He’s been with me in all my travels inside buses, trains, peaceful boats and treks over the mountain ranges.

Whenever I’ve slept with a bad day behind me, two things gave me courage – the fact that the next day would be there soon and that Life, my friend would be there standing by my side, ready to take on anything that comes in our way. Take that fear away from me and into your sway.

Through joy, sadness, excitement, reluctance, pain, elation, success, defeat, night and day, I know I must…

Until death do us part, my friend – in you, I trust.

Sometimes we just give everything else a higher priority - academics, work, family, friends... no time in the modern world to look after life, is there?

In this post about "Life" I remembered one thought which Swami Vivekananda told..

"Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take but by the moments that take our breath away.".

  • Very well written. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

The thing is though, a day will come when life will introduce you to another friend named Mr D. Ask you to shake his hand.. and run the hell outta there!

Well.. You can only be faithful for so long :P

  • Reaper : Christmas update ! I've been hitting my head off trying to plan something for Christmas. Right now, it all looks like going down the drain !! Stil hoping to make SOME arrangements though.

Di :Maybe I'll wish to be single again, yeah but atleast then I can say "been there, done that". What you doing this Christmas?

Zii :Omnipresence of Sundar Kanyas is something I have noticed. Sadly though, have never been able to go any further than just seeing them !

Shark :Thanks a lot, I am glad you liked the post. Sadly though, I dont think I've won the X-box. Bloody buggers like printing childish stuff that comes up in every college/company magazine. Stuff I wrote when I was in 10th standard. There's no room for some mature, thoughtful prose. Hmmph (Ok, I'm a sore loser, so sue me).

Usha :Thanks. Does it have any significance in your life though? Do you sometimes feel that there is more that you could have done with your best friend?

Minakshi :No x-box :(. Thanks for the comment though. How'd you hit upon my humble blog?

Apy :Thy comments are as small as thy name, brother ! Bholi soorat dil ke khote, naam chotte aur darshan bi chotte ! Just a song I like, not implying that you are a 'dil ka khota', LOL.

Niah :Thanks a ton for the wishes. I wish you have more highs than lows in YOUR life too. Singapore is a nice place to have exactly such a life, isnt it?

    Chitra :Dhanyawaad !

Jedi :How correct thou art, my brother, earth hath seen no fury like death of the beloved(Just for your info, I ad-libbed that right now). Isnt it weird how we all seem to dread Dr. D when we all know we will meet him someday?

I think that a man who is more content with what he has done with his life is less scared of dying than one who is not. What do you think?

great post as usual guns, life...id never know where to start and i dont think id be able to end either.
But I guess once in a while its always good to put things in perspective.

  • Thats ok Guns... May be the x-box was just not worth it... :-)

    "humble blog" now thats modesty...

well, I just somehow navigated to your blog... perhaps just drifted from friends blogs, through their links to their friends and so on. found your post interesting and so commented. :-)

  • Impressive existential babble ma friend. Nice projection of what truly racks your head and messes with your mind. This isn't the first time you have done this though lol.

All this for an X-box?!?! Bah!

    Keep writing though,

    Cheers!

  • Scars :I didnt get the x-box [:-(]. I guess it was an eye opener for me too - this article. I always write essays (in exams), blog articles, product reviews, letters to people etc. im-promptu and its only after I've finished the whole thing, I pause and read it myself.

I guess we've all got stuck into an age where our priorities towards life have changed. Enjoying life has taken a backseat and all we do is save up for tomorrow so that we can enjoy life tomorrow. Sadly, its an unending cycle and as the saying goes - "Tomorrow never comes".

Minakshi :I'm really pleased when new people do visit my blog and spend time to comment. A lot of people read blogs in their free (and not so free) time and sometimes they like/hate a few articles, others they just ignore/overlook. The fact that you commented means that you atleast READ the post carefully and that is satisfaction enough for me. Having your thoughts and views communicated to a variety of people is a great high and it never fails to raise my spirits when such an instance occurs.

Thanks for reading and I hope you keep visiting the blog regularly.

Karan :Exams khatm? I hope you start posting soon. You promised a whole gamut of film reviews, remember? Maybe you can also put up some photos.

This article - it was initially an impromptu writeup for the x-box but when I read it a week later, I felt that there was a strain in it. I thus ended up putting it up on the blog. I was wondering whether it would sound too soppy/senti(crappy)mental but then I thought, what-the-heck !

Apy :Zindagi pyaar kaa geet hai, isse har dil ko gaana padega.

You should post more often, bro...

  • What a wonderful post ! Wonderful thought. It was an eye opener, how we always try to ignore this friend of ours. No time in this hectic world to look after life and cherish it.

Now, before you ask me how I came here, it's BendTheRulz who has always asked me to read your blog b'coz he thinks we two (you and me) write our hearts out.

But I don't think we are comparable. Today I could come here. Will come again.

Wish you a Happy New Year !

  • Hi Guns,
yes there are people who read blogs in their free and not so free time. I am one of those who when reaches office in the morning, very religiously checks her own blog and all the linking blogs and all the pages that the friends link and so on. Always keep waiting for new posts, for new thoughts, new ideas... for every thought widens my horizon a bit.

yes... being a blogger myself, I know how it feels to be able to communicate to large number of people through your blog... and I can see you are quite popular too. :-)

Oh I do visit your blog very often and my responses are a testimony to it... isn't it? :-)

    keep blogging... keep sharing.
    Cheers!

Minakshi : Thanks and please keep visiting. You keep writing yourself so we can SHARE the "knowledge". [:-)]

Kavita :Christmas in London. Sorry for the late reply though. The Christmas wasnt a WHITE one though. No snow [:-(]. Warmest winter EVER.

Kavi : Really glad to know you liked it.

    Niah : [:-)]

Aparna :Wow, thats COOL. Which places have you trekked to?

    Alice : No [:-(]

Kavi, Minakshi, Shark :Happy New Year to you too (though I am almost 4 months late)

Sumit :Welcome to the blog. It is an interesting way yeah. I thought about it myself and found that in an urban fast paced life, there are a lot of things which take higher priority than life itself. Unfair, isnt it?
